Mental Health

Individuals that are educated in the mental health field are fast to point out how common mental illness is and how most of these disorders are treatable. However, just because your mental health may not always be up to par doesn’t necessarily mean that you're suffering from a mental illness that must be treated with medications. In fact, feeling poor mentally may just mean that you are struggling through a phase of depression, anxiety or confusion. Maybe you've recently suffered a tragedy in your life or perhaps you're going through changes that are having an affect on your outlook. Being temporarily depressed does not mean that you have a psychiatric disorder.

Mental illness is one of the leading causes of crippling disability in the United States. When someone’s mental health isn’t consistantly stable it will affect their ability to function normally in all other areas of their life. It will have an affect on their work behavior and production, it will affect their long term relationships; marriages and friendships among them. Employers can't and won't have workers who aren't productive working for their companies. The only option for someone with an ongoing psychiatric disorder is to apply for disability. This could take anywhere from several months to several years, especially if applying for Social Security Disability.

Having mental health disorder's does not mean that the person is completely unable to function. Some mental illnesses are easy to regulate with  treatment and medication. Others are far more serious and require more intense psychological therapy and medications. When a person has a difficult time distinguishing the difference between right and wrong, then they are in need of major assistance.

I’ve heard so many stories from family members of different individuals who've committed suicide saying how shocked they were that this person took their own life. They seemed as though they were happy. However, that wasn’t the case at all. People don’t take their own lives when they are psychologically stable and healthy. More than likely, the person tried to hint that they were having a problem or reached out for help and it went unnoticed.

It's easy  to overlook someone else’s comments and sufferings, in the hustle of everyday life,  that might have given hints to their personal thoughts and fears. Though life can be very hectic and more people lack the desire to become involved with other people's lives, it could make a big difference.

Being depressed, suffering from anxiety or being obsessive does not have to be normal circumstances for people. Nobody expects you to walk around constantly smiling and happy. Everyone has a bad day and their own mood swings. When it becomes a frequent event, that's when something should be done. Your mental health is a precious thing so, if you find yourself having psychological problems, please take the time to see your doctor right away.
